        Mini Donkey Terminology

        Ass- correct term for the animal commonly known as the donkey; scientific term: Equus asinus

        Burro- small donkey descended from Mexican and Spanish stock, native to the southwestern U.S.

        Dam- a donkey’s mother

        Donkey- nickname for all members of the ass family

        Gelding- male donkey that has been altered (castrated) so it cannot reproduce

        Hinny- a cross between a male horse (stallion) and a female donkey (jennet)

        Jack – male donkey ( also Jackass, Jack Ass)

        Jenny or Jennet- female donkey

        Large Standard Donkey- 48.01” to 56” for males and 54” for females at the shoulder

        Mammoth Donkey- males over 56” and females over 54” tall at the shoulder

        Miniature Donkey- under 36 inches tall at the shoulder

        Miniature Mediterranean Donkey- donkeys originally imported from the Italian Islands of Sicily and Sardinia and other Mediterranean areas, under 36” tall at the shoulder

        Mule- a cross between a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare)

        Sire- a donkey’s father

        Small Standard Donkey- a subdivision of the standard donkey group 36.01” to 40” tall

        Standard Donkey- 36.01 to 48 inches tall at the shoulder
